The Clock Market, A Good Time to Buy a Porsche

Beverly Hills Porsche at Night
It’s been said that Los Angeles was built around the automobile. Arguably the city’s architecture has evolved along with the car culture. In 1928 architects C.W. Wilson + Sons were commissioned to create a market place specifically designed to attract and accommodate Los Angeles’ motoring public. The Clock Market, named for the large clock tower, was designed to be a multi vendor shopping center with plenty of off street parking. The L-shaped structure once housed a mom-and-pop dry goods market and covered open air produce booths. The center also included a unique feature, a second floor nine room apartment designed for the proprietor’s family. The Clock Market is widely considered the areas first “strip mall”, a neighborhood shopping center design that would eventually become a regular theme in Los Angeles architecture.
